02 · CARTRIDGES & GAUGES
One cartridge. More than one name.
Choose any cartridge name to explore its guide, or search familiar names and published designations side by side. Compare bullet diameters in inches or millimeters using the unit toggle in the diameter column. Introduction years appear in the last column.
Explore the complete cartridge library → · What do colored bullet tips mean?
Diameters are published drawing maxima unless a row says otherwise. Gauge and bore entries show the minimum smooth-bore diameter, not a bullet or slug size.
Introduced: commercial launch/model year unless marked Service, NATO, or custom origins. “c.” means approximate. Ages use the current calendar year. Historical gauges have no verified single launch year. Select a dated entry’s year for its source. In Show all, sort by age or bullet/bore diameter; undated entries stay last when sorting by age.
No cartridge names match. Try a shorter name or another spelling.
Diameters shown in inches. How to read the diameter references
These values describe the diameter identified on the linked source drawing. A maximum is a permitted upper limit, not a claim that every bullet has that exact diameter. Jacketed and lead values are listed separately when the drawing distinguishes them. The .22 LR reference uses the sporting drawing. The 5.56 NATO, 7.62 NATO and .50 Beowulf rows use explicitly labeled identification or manufacturer reference values rather than claiming a SAAMI or NATO maximum.
Conversions use exactly 25.4 millimeters per inch, calculated from the source’s original unit. Inches are rounded to four decimal places and millimeters to three; the conversion can differ slightly from a separately rounded number printed on a drawing. Shotgun bore minima are not shot, wad, or slug diameters and do not identify shell length.
These are identification references, not ammunition compatibility advice. A cartridge name is not necessarily its bullet diameter. Check the firearm’s markings and manufacturer documentation. SAAMI: commercial vs. military standards — PDF p. 3.
03 · PLAN YOUR RANGE VISIT
Find a place to shoot
Start with NSSF's Where To Shoot range directory to look for indoor and outdoor ranges. Contact the range to confirm public access, hours, reservations, and equipment restrictions before visiting.
Your location text is sent to Google only when you open the link. No map or location service loads on this page.
04 · A QUICK UNIT CONVERSION
Inches ↔ millimeters
Enter a dimension in either field; the other updates automatically. One inch equals exactly 25.4 millimeters. Similar cartridge names are not necessarily interchangeable.
